Do colleges care about attendance?

All of my life I was under the impression that colleges didn't give a **** about if you showed up or not, only if you completed the work and did your tests. I recently heard a story from someone that his college actually tracks your attendance, and even factors it into your grades. This was very unsettling. It is a small school with very small cl sizes though.
