Is it really unlawful to buy firearms and ammunition in Australia, now?

I heard about this from a trusted friend, a fellow Texan, and a US Army Veteran from the Vietnam War. When did it become unlawful to own or purchase firearms and ammunition in Australia? As far as I and many of my fellow Texans have been concerned, we would not have hesitated, previously, to choose Australia as our second most favorite country.
